"The Role of Animal Power in 19th and 20th Century Agriculture"

NEW APD 2000 OUTDOOR EXHIBIT AND DEMONSTRATION

Be a part of Pennsylvania's Agricultural History
on August 15,16 & 17, 2000, at the Penn State Ag Progress Days site in
Rock Springs, Pennsylvania.

During Ag Progress Days 2000 the Pasto Agricultural Museum's theme was " The Role of Animal Power in 19th- and 20th-Century Agriculture." At least twenty-five animal powered items were exhibited outdoors. The 1905 O.K. horse powered stationary hay press, first exhibited last year after complete restoration, was demonstrated with horses and hay. We even threshed grain with an 1870s horse treadle power and 1870s grain thresher. Also a wonderful 1920 horse-drawn manure spreader, McCormick-Deering rope hay loader, and a Yellow Jacket horse-drawn potato sprayer - all donated and cleaned this past winter - were exhibited.

The following photographs, provided by the Pasto Agricultural Museum,
Penn State University, College of Agricultural Sciences, are a few fine examples of this unique exhibit.

Volunteer Curator Darwin Braund proudly sits atop the Galloway Pat'D Spreader circa 1920 following complete disassembly, cleaning and oiling by him and Penn State Farm Operations employee Joe Shafranich during February and March 2000. Pulled by two large horses, the box is removable so the heavy-duty running gear can be used for other purposes. Cast iron drive gears 30"-diameter are clamped to the inside of each rear wheel. Front end gate is removable with original stenciling "Detachable Power Feed."

McCormick-Deering rope hay loader (manufactured by International Harvester Company) between 1914 and 1921. Hay was picked up and placed on an endless conveyor made of wood slats and ropes that elevated hay onto a wagon to which the hay loader was hitched.

McCormick-Deering rope hay loader (manufactured by International Harvester Company) circa 1914 - 1921. The top quarter of the loader could be adjusted by a crank and chain from a low height of 7'4" to 10' above ground level. This allowed high loads to be built on the wagon.
